SIGNATE Collaborates with Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) by Administering “Tellus Satellite Challenge” as Second Satellite Data Analysis Contest Sponsored as Part of Satellite Data Platform Usage Promotion Plan

-Theme Is “Using High-Resolution Optical Satellite Data to Detect Vessels in Bodies of Water”-

As a part of the “Project for Establishment of Open and Free Government Satellite Data and Business Environmental Arrangement for Data Utilization” (referred to as the “project” below) of the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) which SAKURA Internet Inc., a provider of Internet infrastructure services (main office in Osaka City, Osaka, President & CEO Kunihiro Tanaka) is undertaking for METI, SIGNATE Inc., which provides human resource hiring and training services for AI developers and data scientists (main office in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, President & CEO Shigeru Saito) is assisting by administering the “Tellus Satellite Challenge” to be held from January 18th, 2019 as the second satellite data analysis contest.

The Tellus Satellite Challenge is designed to achieve understandable visual representations of satellite data usage examples, discover exceptional human resources in the area of analysis, promote greater awareness and understanding regarding satellite data types, and achieve other such ends with the goal of promoting widespread utilization of the Tellus satellite data platform constructed by SAKURA Internet through this project.

The theme of this second contest is “Using High-Resolution Optical Satellite Data to Detect Vessels in Bodies of Water,” from the perspective of streamlining comprehension of the state of the ocean by taking advantages of the characteristics of satellite data in order to observe a wide area. Specifically, this includes determining whether or not a vessel is stationary by examining its motion in satellite image data, or identifying barges (vessels that carry cargo and so on between a ship and a dock).

Algorithms with an excellent level of detection accuracy will earn contestants prizes, and will be published in a format whereby they can be used with Tellus.
